FTH partners with Mercy & Grace Ministries to feed Indian street children
Feed The Hungry is reaching out to the orphaned and vulnerable children of Andra Pradesh, India. Working together with Madhava and Nirmala from Mercy & Grace Ministries, we are heading directly into 27 villages and slums to help the very neediest children. Destitute, orphaned, and abandoned by their families, many of these children are trapped in India's heartbreaking child labor system.
Mercy & Grace Ministries are welcomed in the villages of India. We have been working with them since the Asian Tsunami in early 2005. They prepare hot cooked meals, teach the children to read and write, and share the Gospel. But they need someone to provide the food. That's what Feed The Hungry does - with your generous help!
In western cultures the phrase "Three meals a day" is the accepted norm for a healthy diet. It's such a commonplace event, that many of us can't comprehend what it's like to struggle each day to eat enough to survive. For the children of Andra Pradesh, even one meal a day is considered a luxury.
This is where FTH and Mercy & Grace ministries want to start.
FTH wants to guarantee that one thousand street children receive a nutritious meal every day. We won't be providing "gourmet" meals. But we will give these precious children what they need to survive day by day: a tasty mix of rice, eggs, fresh vegetables, and milk.
Maybe this sounds like an impossibly expensive plan. But in that culture, it only takes 48 cents to give a child a solid, high-nutrition meal. That means that every $14.40 given by caring Christian friends like you will translate into a month's worth of meals for a needy child of India!
It's not hard for most of us to spend $15 on just one average meal in a restaurant. And yet this same relatively small amount can ease the suffering of a hungry child in India for a whole month - we can help that child grow and give them a fighting chance against disease, physical deformity, and other life-shattering effects of malnutrition.
Alongside the daily meal, there is a gospel ministry and educational program for the children; teaching the illiterate to read & write, and learning the word of God. Each child will also receive a gift, an easy-to-read, illustrated Gospel literature in their native Telegu language. Best of all, the children will also learn about a true Friend - a friend called Jesus.
